On Neustadt 31, 33 and 35 in 23966 Wismar — three connected merchant townhouses inside the UNESCO World Heritage core of the Hanseatic city. Five minutes' walk from the market square, three from St. Mary's, eight from the old harbour.

All eight apartments are reached through one shared entrance in the front of Neustadt 35 (in the former storefront). From the hallway, staircases lead to the individual floors; the courtyard connects the three houses. You'll receive your key or code by email before arrival — self check-in, around the clock.

Slim, tall townhouses in the Hanseatic vernacular — a building form that originated in medieval port cities like Wismar, Lübeck and Stralsund. Because plots facing the main street were scarce and expensive, the houses were built very narrow and very deep, often around an inner courtyard. The shape resembles a long, standing towel — hence the German name 'towel house'. Our buildings on Neustadt were raised around 1900 in this tradition, as private residences — the historic form still defines Wismar's old-town streetscape.

These historic houses have narrow staircases and no lift — that's part of the Handtuchhaus character. The ground-floor apartment in Neustadt 35 (former shop) and the ground floor in Neustadt 33 are step-free; the others are reached by stairs. Write to us and we'll recommend the right apartment.

Wismar's old town is largely car-free. We recommend the public 'Altstadt' car park (at Lindengarten, ca. 4 min walk) or the harbour parking. Brief loading directly in front of the house is possible. Arrival by train is recommended — the station is a 12-minute walk away.

The market square with its Wasserkunst, St. Mary's tower, St. Nicholas church, the Schabbellhaus, the Wassertor and the old harbour — all on foot. The island of Poel and its beaches lie 14 km away. Wismar was the location for Murnau's 'Nosferatu' (1922) and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002.
